The team behind Twilight Saga: Eclipse is whistling a happy tune all the way to the bank today. After just ONE showing last night at midnight, the flick made $30 MILLION dollars. Crazy! That’s making back almost half of its budget in ONE showing.
It surpassed New Moon’s opening night of $26.3 million. It also made a record $1 million dollars in IMAX showings, beating out the previous record held by Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. Some theaters offered a special viewing of Twilight and New Moon prior to the midnight show, pulling in an additional $2.4 million!
Although it is off to a mind-boggling start, it’s not expected to exceed New Moon’s $142.8 million opening weekend.
Ashley Greene is also pretty sassy herself!
There is a hilarious parody of Twilight in the form of an old 8-bit video game on Youtube, just like the original Nintendo games. It merges a few storylines from New Moon, but is mainly Eclipse based. The cool thing about this video is that it is interactive and are able to choose certain paths. Choose different paths if you want to see some good jokes.
Ashley Greene and Xavier Samuel were in Antwerp, Belgium, this evening to premiere Eclipse.
Twilight Lexicon’s source, Larry 411 has now posted an article about the Eclipse Box office with numbers on the midnight opening. The numbers are reflective of midnight of June 30, as well as early this afternoon. Theatre’s are sold out worldwide, as for NYC – apparently the 12:15, 12:30 and 1:00 am showings were all filled.
Check out the analysis below:
“The Twilight Saga was the biggest opening of all time at 4416 venues. So it’s no surprise that early reports say theaters were mobbed not just in America but overseas as well.
There are a few things to watch for (click the links for daily numbers and extensive analysis). The Twilight Saga: New Moon opened on November 20, 2009 with $26.27 million from 3514 midnight screenings at 4024 locations.
The film took in $72.7M its first day, on its way to a $142.8M weekend, making it the #3 all-time and #1 non-summer opening weekend of all time. After the second weekend, its domestic total was $230.95M and worldwide was $473.95M. The filmpassed the $1/2 billion mark worldwide in its third weekend. After four weekends,New Moon sat at $267.32M domestic. And the film ended its fifth weekend with a total $274.6M domestic and $634.7M worldwide on its way to a current theatrical total of $296.6M domestic and $709.7M worldwide.”
Amanda Bell, the Twilight Examiner, also has a great article that concurs with Larry’s findings and expands more.
“All along – during the downtime between The Twilight Saga: New Moon‘s release and‘s – fans have been asking this question: will The Twilight Saga: Eclipse surpass the incredible numbers set forth by ?
No doubt, the biggest achievement of New Moon in the box office was to set the record for . So, the topic has definitely lingered as to whether the summer Eclipse showing will top that record.
Also, the staggering numbers (3rd highest ever) for New Moonreached $140.7 million in the first three days. So, whether Eclipse will eclipse New Moon‘s opening weekend figures is prominent as well.
According to TheWrap.com, industry predictions give the nod to Eclipse in at least the second portion of the inquiry.”
Phil Tippett, who did the visual effects for Eclipse, talked with MTV and gave them a behind-the-scenes look at the Eclipse wolves.
Check it all out here.
Here is an excerpt:
Taylor’s Wolf Is Sad
Tippett and his crew spent countless hours perfecting each member of the wolf pack, but obviously Taylor Lautner’s wolf receives the most screen time and thus required the closest attention. Specifically, they had to capture Jacob’s unrequited love for Bella while he was in wolf-form.
“Through non-language pantomime on the wolf’s part, he had to appear to be engaged and try to make his expressions telegraph the tragic love that is their relationship,” Tippett said. “So there is a sad kind of a longing and protectiveness that we try to imbue him with.”
To get the look right, crew members traveled up to a wolf preserve, and actually got into pens with the 200-pound animals and sketched out what they observed.
“I’m a huge advocate of that. Anytime you can get close to an animal, that’s the closet model you can find,” he said. “And the animators are cast just like actors. Certain animators are really strong on action and there are animators that are really strong on the emotional moments. And the animators strong on emotion were the ones creating the emotional response of Jacob’s wolf.”
